Collisions
Dynamics, speeds and responsibility in collisions.
A third vehicle nobody proved

The case
- Two cars collided head-on on a left-hand curve of a two-lane highway, in the rain, with an 80 km/h limit. One driver died and five people were seriously injured.
- The official report accepted the idea of a third vehicle, a small car that would have chased a motorbike, touched one of the cars and thrown it into the other.
- The only basis was one witness statement, rich in detail and covering about 1 km of chase. The driver of the car supposedly touched said she remembered no overtaking.
- From the damage, the crash happened in the lane of the car carrying the driver who died.
How we helped the client
One of the surviving victims hired us to redo the dynamics. We started from the report’s own traces, not from the witness statement.
The mark on the side of the car rises from front to rear and the deformations are typical of a collision with a fixed object. In an overtaking, the contact would run the other way, from rear to front.
At the roadside, the grass was bent the other way, the fragments were covered by soil and new weeds, and the fallen sign showed no impact mark. The proposed path did not even fit a car’s turning radius.
The direction of contact: what was found and what the theory required
The car that crossed into the oncoming lane caused the collision. There is no evidence of a third vehicle.
